Skill 3: Going Through Doors and Accessing Elevators
Doors
When approaching doors, put your “guiding” arm in the position that indicates a narrow space and tell the individual you are traveling with whether the door opens to the left or right, and whether it opens toward you or away from you. For example, “The door opens toward us on the left,” or “The door is a push right.”
The individual can then be prepared to assist with the door as he passes through the doorway.
Elevators
When entering an elevator, put your “guiding” arm in the position that indicates a narrow space. Once inside the elevator, you will likely have to turn around to exit the elevator.
The person being guided will let go of you to give both of you time to turn 180 degrees in place, then he or she will move behind you and grab your arm again.
